RECENT PERFORMANCES

2018

April 29 - Jan, Judy, Claire and Colleen once again collaborated with Alliance Classical Players to present Quintet for Piano and Winds (Mozart) featuring pianist Gregory Unangst at a concert hosted by the B Sharp Club of Utica, at Munson Williams Proctor Institute of Art. 

April 21 and 22 - Jewel Winds performed with Alliance Classical Players in two concerts at locations in Rome and Syracuse. The program included The Heavens Declare (Marcello), Quintet for Piano and Winds (Mozart) featuring pianist Gregory Unangst, Ballad (Cowell) and Suite No. 1 for Winds (Lefebvre). The locations were:

April 21 - First Presbyterian Church, Rome NY 

April 22 - St. Alban's Episcopal Church - Syracuse NY 

April 19 - Jewel Winds collaborated with educator and actor Susan Lincoln to present "Music and Poetry" for Herkimer, NY BOCES 6th Grade Honors Program. Students heard quintet music inspired by or linked with poetry, and worked as groups or individuals to create poems in five styles: humorous verse modeled on the work of Ogden Nash, haiku, free verse, diamantes and narrative poetry. Music performed by Jewel Winds included: Animal Ditties (Anthony Plog), Bagatelles for Bugs (Zachary Bramble), Roaring Fork (Eric Ewazen) and Wonderland (Sy Brandon). 

2017

December 16 - Woodwind players of Jewel Winds performed in a benefit concert event at Rome Art and Community Center.

November 16 - Jewel Winds quintet presented a Family Concert at Maxwell Library, Camillus, NY. The program featured the narrated piece Ferdinand the Bull (with music from "Carmen"); Bagatelles for Bugs, with additional poetry; I Bought Me a Cat; Yukimushi; What a Wonderful World; selections from Harry Potter; and a few other family-friendly, literature-supporting pieces. 

August 19 - Jewel members Jan, Claire and Colleen performed with the  group Alliance Classical Players in Rome NY, in a program of works by Krommer, Handel, Douglas and more. 

June 10 - Jewel members Jan, Judy and Colleen performed with Alliance Classical Players at Rome Art and Community Center, Rome NY is a program of music by Beethoven, Mozart and Grainger.  

2016

October - The Jewels spent a day at Dolgeville Central School District, performing two school-wide assemblies and presenting a clinic/demonstration for band students in grades 7-12. Elementary assembly concert focused on music and reading, including narrated musical selections, and the 7-12 assembly concert was titled "The Golden Age of Woodwind Quintets" and featured many quintet gems including works by Ibert, Ravel, Hindemith, Berlin, Gershwin and more. The "Golden Age" concert also featured a a backdrop of images and text displayed on a large screen, relating to happenings around the world and in the lives of the composers, supporting learning in social studies. 

July - Jewel Winds visited the Fairmount Library to present a children's concert of lively tunes and narrated music!

June - The quintet performed at the International French Horn Symposium at Ithaca College, Ithaca NY. Jewel Winds played on a concert featuring music of composer Daniel Baldwin, presenting the northeast US premiere of his piece for woodwind quintet, "Dreams of the White Tiger." 

February - The quintet played a Valentine's weekend concert at Eastern Star Home in Oriskany, NY, featuring many well loved songs of tin pan alley, Great American Songbook, and many more.    

2015

September - Jewel Winds performed a program of music by French composers to accompany the exhibit "From Monet to Matisse" at Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute in Utica, NY. Selections included works by Debussy, Milhaud, Faure, Ibert, LeFebvre, Barthe, Colomer, and Chretien.

July - The quintet presented "Pops and Patriots" as part of Rome Concert Band's summer concert series at Jervis Public Library, Rome, NY. Patriotic music, kid-friendly pops and the narrated piece "The Story of the Woodwind Family" were all on the program. Narrator was Susan Lincoln.    

March - The Jewels visited Stockbridge Valley Central School to present a morning assembly and masterclasses, and to perform on an evening "spy-themed" concert. The quintet commissioned a new arrangement by Monk Roweof Quincy Jones' "Soul Bossa Nova" for this event. 

January - The quintet teamed with pianist Greg Unangst to present an ambitious program of two sextets: the Poulenc Sextet and Sextet by Ludwig Thuille. Two concerts were presented as part of The Music Studio's "Showcase" series. The Music Studio is located in Rome, NY. 

2014

Monday, July 14, 2014 - Rome Art and Community Center - Jewel Winds presented a free Family Concert titled "Amazing Animals". The show was co-presented by RACC and Rome Community Concert Band and featured narrated stories and kid-friendly pops, including "The Unhappy Aardvark", music from video games, Sousa marches and an arrangement of "Let it Go" from Disney's Frozen.

Friday, May 9, 2014 - Utica College Library - Three members of Jewel Winds (Jan Bookhout, Judy Marchione and Colleen O'Neil) performed the Bozza Trio for Oboe, Clarinet and Bassoon at the Utica B Sharp Club Spring Concert. 

2013

July 31, 2013 - Dolgeville, NY Manheim Public Library - Jewel Winds presented two Young People's Concerts in conjunction with Manheim Library's Summer Reading Program. The concerts include kid-friendly favorites and narrated musical stories. 

Saturday, March 9, 2013 - 1 PM - Temple Concord, Syracuse, NY - Jewel Winds presented a Family Concert featuring music linking art, literature and music. The centerpiece of the concert was Keith Amos' narrated story for quintet titled "Lupin, the Pot-Bellied Pig", which tells the delightful tale of a little pig living a simple but enjoyable life on the quiet island of Sark. Other selections on the program are lively and family-friendly!

 2011-2012

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - 12:30 PM - Utica, NY - Utica College Lunch Hour Series - The program  included Ferenc Farkas' Ancient Hungarian Dances, a quintet by Danzi, two selections for quintet and piano by Alec Wilder, and a movement of two of Bill Douglas' Suite for Woodwind Quintet.

Friday, February 10, 2012 - Dolgeville Central Schools, Dolgeville NY - The quintet visited for a day-long series of events that included morning masterclasses for senior high band students and two afternnon concerts. The K-6 concert featured a performance of "The Bassoonist of Hamelin" among other literacy-related musical selections. The 7-12 concert was titled "The Modern Quintet" and featured a mix of contemporary quintet originals and arrangements of well-known pops. 

Sunday, November 13, 2011 - 2 PM - Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute, Genesee St., Utica, NY - The woodwinds of Jewel Winds performed Bill Douglas' newly-commissioned woodwind quartet for flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon. The program was offered by the B Sharp Club of Utica and featured other performers as well.

Sunday, October 30, 2011 - 2:30 PM - Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute, Genesee St., Utica, NY - "Stage Fright" sponsored by the B Sharp Club of Utica. Jewel Winds performed an arrangement of "The Sorcerer's Apprenctice" and the quintet's alter egos, The Ghoul Winds were in costume to perform Lady Gaga's "Poker Face". Other Halloween-themed performers appeared on this light-hearted program as well. The concert benefitted B Sharp Club's annual scholarships to music majors.

Wednesday, September 21, 2011 - 12:30 PM - Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY This free lunch-hour concert for Civic Morning Musicals included music of Barthe, Beethoven, Douglas and Cowell. More information about this series, including a schedule can be found at www.civicmorningmusicals.org.

Monday, July 18, 2011 - 7-8 PM - Grace Church, Utica, NY - As part of the Classical Performances Series of the "Utica Monday Night" weekly arts festival, Jewel Winds presented an eclectic program of quintet gems that included music of Barthe, Beethoven, Cowell, Lefebrve and Bill Douglas. Tuesday, July 5, 2011 - 2:30 PM - Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Institute, 310 Genesee St., Utica, NY - Jewel Winds performed in the Museum of Art's Edward W. Root Sculpture Court, as part of the Institute's summer festival programs. Traditional wedding music and light classics were on the program, in celebration of the Institute's exhibit "Wedded Perfection: Two Centuries of Wedding Gowns". 2010

Saturday, December 11, 2010 - BARNES AND NOBLE, New Hartford, NY - 4 pm - Jewel Winds performed in the day-long bookfair to benefit the Arts in Education Institute. Rebecca Oswald's Aesop's Fables, narrated by Beth Evans; Anthony Plog's Animal Ditties, narrated by the quintet; and Christmas On the Mall, arranged by Bill Holcombe were on the program. A small but enthusiastic crowd attended this free concert, as well as many of day's other arts events sponsored by AEI. Sunday, Sept. 19 at 2:30 pm - Jervis Public Library, Rome, NY - Jewel Winds performed from 2:30-3:30 for the library's "Casual Concerts" series. Program included: Passacaille by A. Barthe, Three Shanties by Malcolm Arnold, Summer Day Suite by Prokofiev/McAlister, Animal Ditties by Anthony Plog, Three Preludes for Piano by Gershwin, arr. Hoyt, Yesterday & Maxwell's Silver Hammer by Lennon & McCartney/Buckley.

August 21, 2010 - 1 pm - A mini-concert for kids and families titled "Concerts, Cookies and Crafts" featured Jewel Winds members Jan Bookhout, Corni Brewster and Colleen O'Neil. Selections included mvt 1 of Arnold's "Divertimento" for fl., ob., cl. and the premiere of "Fish is Fish" - story by Leo Lionni and original music by the trio.

June 11, 2010 - 8:45 am and 9:30 am - two concerts for grades K-3 at Fort Plain Elementary School featuring "Aesop's Fables."
